Why not ask motorists to pay more? Why not ask electricity consumers to pay more? And then at the end of the year, you can take your invoices to the tax office and get a rebate on the carbon tax you paid. It would be burdensome, all taxes are burdensome, but it would certainly change the price on carbon, raise the price of carbon without increasing in any way the overall tax burden.” Useful Links: Carbon price: Effect on food prices is.gd Official Whyalla Watch #CarbonTaxGeddon Countdown: is.gd Factbox: Carbon taxes around the world is.gd Carbon Tax Explained Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org Greg Hunt Thesis: A Tax to Make the Polluter Pay. is.gd Clean Energy Future: www.cleanenergyfuture.gov.au Economists back carbon tax package is.gd Scientific opinion on climate change is that the Earth’s climate system is unequivocally warming and it is more than 90% certain that humans are causing it through activities that increase concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels.is.gd Concurring organizations include: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2007 US Global Change Research Program Arctic Climate Impact Assessment Academies of Science: InterAcademy Council European Academy of

Mr Abbott: There is the carbon tax—that wrecking ball that is about to swing right through the Australian economy from 1 July – Hansard Thursday, 31 May 2012

If Labor had money they would put the first 15 seconds of this clip on TV ads wall to wall for the next 12 months. Abbott’s credibility would be so shot, when the election comes around they will have reverted back to Malcolm Turnbull as Opposition Leader. The problem is Malcolm that he is compromised too, as he AGREED to putting a price on carbon and had an agreement with the Labor government.
But… Labor is NOT allowed to spend money on those ads as Howard WAS on the GST selling propaganda.

    More Tony Abbott Statements:

This is the mother of all Taxes (No not GST)

Great Big New Tax On Everything (No not GST)

    Climate Change is Crap.

We will fight this every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month.

There will be a people’s revolt.

Whyalla will be wiped off the map by Julia Gillard’s carbon tax.

This is a pledge in blood this tax will go. We will rescind it.

I have staked my political life, what’s left of it, on stopping this carbon tax.

  4. geeksrulz

It will destroy the steel industry, the cement industry, the aluminium industry, the motor industry it will be, over time, the death of heavy manufacturing in Australia

Well I’ve said all along that the carbon tax ultimately spells death for the coal industry…

Was Mr Abbott arguing here for a Cobra Tax or a Python Tax variety? Like a Snake Oil salesman, it is whatever you want it to be.

    SWEDEN

Sweden has the highest carbon tax in the world at $US150.
In 1991, Sweden enacted a tax on the use of coal, oil, natural gas, petrol and aviation fuel used in domestic travel. The tax was 0.25 SEK/kg ($US100 per tonne of C02) and was later raised to $US150. With Sweden raising prices on fossil fuels since enacting the carbon tax, it cut its carbon pollution by 9 per cent between 1990 and 2006.

Lmao @ “all the lies we’ve received from Gillard”. You mean how she simply changed her mind about the carbon tax, stole the idea from Abbott, and now Abbott is pissy about it and is only opposing his own idea for the sake of opposing it? Yeah she’s the devil /sarcasm

  11. Foetoid2k6

Exactly. The legislation isn’t actually bad at all. Julia stole the idea, Abbott got pissy about it, and now he’s opposing it for the sake of opposing it.

  12. Wupster1

Why is the carbon tax bad Tony?

    Well look….THEY JUST ARE

  13. acotrel1

In the 60s we set up EPAs to control pollution. If they had ever done their jobs and fined polluters , we’d be paying the price already ! Abbott’s approach is simply more bullshit !

  14. cunnamullafalla

IT’S OFFICIAL Peter Costello is headed back into politics and will fight for the top job mr Abbot! And its the last thing you need with now with the massive infighting happening with the Liberals in Victoria.. I’ll never vote for Gillard OR you, but I’ll vote for Peter! Australia will vote for Peter! FOR SURE!….

  15. rimian

I’m guessing that Labor is waiting for the next election to use this. They’ll wait until after the legislation has passed and Tony’s toxic tax campaign is at pull pitch.

  16. chargerozzz1

next will be a oxygen tax and if you dont pay you will be called a oxygen thief… im sure you pollys make enough money on fuel tax since you take 50% of what we pay per liter.

  17. ihatelameusernames

I think his motto should be “Goes up and up and up”

  18. enfourski

@ToodyayComputers I don’t know why he said it. But he’s mentioning something that yeah you can do. It wasn’t a policy announcement and he doesn’t even agree with it. If anyone has watched whats gone on in Canberra the past couple of weeks in the Labor party, with all the truth coming out, plus all the lies we’ve received from Gillard, to me this 1 minute video means nothing haha

  19. ToodyayComputers

So why did he say this?

  20. Adirtybird

What was wrong with work choices? Oh maybe you are one of those dudes that logs the hours of the week as “work”.. when i get paid for doing fuck all !, “pissin on” when i get drunk ! And sleeping. Work choices brings all the worlds best work place practices into one that will allow aust to compete on a global scale to retain the jobs we now have…. Or are GM Ford and Toyota looking to abandon us for shits and giggles????? Time to think for all over You.

  21. Adirtybird

Ah but a tax of only 5 cents by 2015

  22. AntipodeanStar

Its taken a long while to find the right word to describe Abbott. Its hard when you want to capture so many concepts. But after much effort I have finally found it…. “Philistine”. “A person who holds a particular attitude or set of values perceived as despising or undervaluing art, beauty, spirituality, or intellectualism. A person with this attitude… may also be considered materialistic, favouring conventional social values unthinkingly and forms of art that have a cheap and easy appeal”.

China to levy carbon tax before 2015

China’s biggest energy-consuming companies are likely to face a direct tax on carbon dioxide emissions by 2015, the Xinhua-backed Economic Information Daily reported on Thursday, citing government sources.

  24. geeksrulz

What did Mr Abbott mean when he said that if you want to put a price on carbon why not do it with a simple tax? He even wanted to put a tax on petrol?

How can someone, who is so vehemently opposed to a price on carbon, even contemplate the possibility of such legislation. His belief is that the carbon price will destroy the economy, wipe Whyalla of the map and mean the end of the mining industry.

If the legislation is really that bad, it is totally irresponsible to ever have considered it.

  25. enfourski

Tony Abbott doesn’t want a carbon tax and never has wanted one. That is the reason he took Malcolm Turnbull’s job, otherwise we would have already had a market based mechanism. The carbon tax is a fucking stupid idea. If it really needs to be done financially then it should be done through a cap and trade, or emissions trading scheme. Not yet ANOTHER tax.
